Ramanand Sagar

Biography

Ramanand Sagar (born Chandramauli Chopra; 29 December 1917 – 12 December 2005) was an iconic Indian film and television director, producer, and writer. Born near Lahore, he began his film journey in 1932 as a clapper boy for the silent film Raiders of the Rail Road. Based on his harrowing experiences during the Indo-Pak partition, he published the acclaimed Hindi-Urdu book Aur Insaan Mar Gaya in 1948. Moving to Bombay in 1949, Sagar worked as an assistant stage manager at Prithviraj Kapoor’s Prithvi Theatres. He soon gained prominence by writing the story and screenplay for Raj Kapoor’s blockbuster Barsaat (1949). However, his early directorial ventures like Bazooband and Mehmaan bombed at the box office. Seeking a fresh start, Sagar moved to Madras to work for Gemini Studios. This collaboration proved to be the turning point of his career. He wrote the story, screenplay, and dialogues for classics like Insaniyat (1955), Raj Tilak (1958), and Paigham (1959)—the latter earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue. Encouraged by Gemini owner S.S. Vasan, Sagar returned to directing, delivering commercial and critical hits with Ghunghat (1960) and Zindagi (1964). Buoyed by this success, he moved back to Mumbai and established Sagar Arts. The banner instantly struck gold with the blockbuster Arzoo (1965). Sagar then won the Filmfare Best Director Award for the hit spy thriller Aankhen (1968). Though the early 1970s saw missteps like Geet and Laalkar, he rebounded with major box-office successes, including Charas (1976), Prem Bandhan (1979), and Baghavat (1982). After his 1985 film Salma underperformed, Sagar pivoted toward television. Sagar Arts entered the television space with Dada Dadi Ki Kahaniyaan (1985). Soon after, Sagar shifted focus to grand historical and mythological epics. His magnum opus, Ramayan, premiered on 25 January 1987. Originally planned for 52 episodes, unprecedented global viewership and popular demand extended the series to 78 episodes. He later directed a special Luv Kush follow-up after receiving a direct request from the Prime Minister’s Office. Sagar continued his television dominance by producing and directing mythic hits like Shri Krishna and Sai Baba, alongside beloved fantasy shows like Vikram Aur Betaal and Alif Laila. In recognition of his massive cultural impact, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2000. Sagar passed away in Mumbai on 12 December 2005 at the age of 88 following prolonged health complications. In December 2019, his son Prem Sagar chronicled his monumental journey from a clerk to a legendary visionary in the biography, An Epic Life: Ramanand Sagar, From Barsaat to Ramayan.
